Meeting 07th July 2019
On Sunday, 7th July at 2 PM The Droimeann Cattle Society are having a meeting at The Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh which will be addressed by a representative of The Pearl Mussel Project. We hope to explore areas where indigenous breeds can form mutually beneficial collaborations with EIP's such as this. We are hopeful that representative of other organisation will also be in attendance to kick off an important discussion re using native breeds for conservation grazing and high nature value farming applications.
The Droimeann Cattle Society
Founded on 11th September 2016 at a meeting held in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown by a number of breeders and non-breeders interested in the preservation of the breed. Full membership is open to breeders in possession of at least one pedigree female recognised by the society as pure. Associate membership open to those who do not have any cattle but are interested in the breed and feel that they may have a role in the preservation of the breed or are just interested in the breed.
The society operates as a co-operative affiliated with the Irish Co-operative Society and the Register of Friendly Societies. Some genetic testing was undertaken on Droimeann Cattle by Weatherbys on an ad hoc basic before Paul Flynn completed a thesis on the breed in 2009. A subsequent genetic study's was undertaken in 2013, followed by tests in 2015, 2016 and samples are currently being prepared for analysis. These studies show the level of purity of the cattle as well as the level of co-ancestry, which allows for the optimal selection of stock bulls for individual herds. The results are promising, revealing cattle of up to 100% purity. To date over 300 cattle have been tested. From here on testing will be conducted on an annual basis on newborn calves.
Sponsorship
Genomic Testing of each animal for 100% purity and parentage remains the primary focus which in turn places a big financial burden on the society, however with the generous sponsorship of BLF Nutrition Ltd, this burden has been negated and allowed the society to begin drafting a strategy for the future of the breed. Thank you BLF Nutrition Ltd!.

Breed Characteristics
The Droimeann is a small to medium sized animal. They are generally even tempered with a placid disposition and are intelligent in nature. They are dairy like in shape and produce milk high in solids. When fattened and killed their meat is marbled and has a distinct flavour. They come in various colours raining from nearly all black, red or white with dark ears and muzzle. More often thy are dark sided red, black or blue with a distinctive white back and underside. They do better than other breeds on poorer forage which they convert easily to milk and meat. The Droimeann cow is very fertile and is early maturing.
For more detailed information regarding the breed and Membership, see the Herdbook Rules.
